Cape Girardeau County Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones presented college scholarships to 1999 graduates of the five high schools in Cape County. Jones hosted a luncheon Tuesday for the recipients and their parents.
This is the fifth year Jones has presented the commissioner's scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at $250. He has given a total of $7,500 over five years.
The recipients are Laura Beck of Jackson High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beck Jr.; Adam Pavelka of Oak Ridge High School, son of Jean Graham; Julie Hogan of Cape Central High School, daughter of Mark and Becky Hogan; Ryan Livingston of Delta High School, son of John and Mary Livingston; and Charity Emmons of Notre Dame High School, daughter of Don and Mary Sue Emmons.
Officials from each school made the selections which were based on leadership, scholarship, citizenship, activities; and potential.
"As a former educator, having spent several years as a teacher and coach, I wanted to make an investment in the future of some of the youths of Cape Girardeau County," Jones said.
Beck will attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the other recipients will all attend Southeast Missouri State University.
