Jeanne White, whose son Ryan died of AIDS last year, will speak in Cape Girardeau Nov. 12.
Ryan, a hemophiliac, was diagnosed in 1984 with the disease, and subsequently was shunned by friends and neighbors in his Indiana hometown. Ryan became a reluctant international celebrity and his mother, an educator on the disease.
Even after court ruling forced schools to allow Ryan to attend, the town's antagonism remained.
Ryan died April 7, 1990 with his mother by his side.
Jeanne White now lives in Cicero, Ind., and travels the United States speaking of her and her son's struggles to cope with AIDS and its repercussions. Her speech is entitled "The Legacy of Ryan White."
White continues to work with AIDS patients and their families, and is involved in fund-raising for AIDS research.
Her presentation will be held at Academic Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $2 for the general public and $1 for students.
