Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional District, Jason Smith, plans to open a campaign office in Cape Girardeau today.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the office will be held at 4 p.m. today at the office location at 330 S. Silver Springs Road, according to a news release from the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce.

Steve Hodges, the Democratic candidate for the district, opened a campaign office in Sikeston, Mo., earlier this week.

Smith and Hodges are seeking to fill the vacancy in the district left by Jo Ann Emerson, who resigned in January to become CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Others on the ballot for the June 4 special election include Libertarian Party candidate Bill Slantz and Constitution Party candidate Doug Enyart.
