Jackson’s East Washington Street soon will undergo an overhaul that has been on the city’s to-do list for more than a decade.

The existing street, sidewalk and subgrade of East Washington Street will be removed and replaced from North Hope Street to a point between North Ohio Street and North Georgia Street after the city’s Board of Aldermen approved the project during its meeting Monday night.

The renovations have been cited by the city as a priority since at least 2004.

“It has been on the list for street repairs for a number of years but was postponed pending roadway design for the area from MoDOT, i.e. the roundabout,” Bogenpohl said.

East Washington Street was used as a truck detour during the roundabout’s construction, which exacerbated the need for repairs.

The reconstruction, expected to cost just under $197,000, will be completed by Fronabarger Concreters Inc. Construction will begin in the next couple of weeks, Bogenpohl said, and will be substantially complete within 90 days.

During the meeting, the board also received good news about another city project, the Hubble Creek Recreational Trail.

Phase 1, which recently was completed, cost nearly $50,000 less than anticipated, public-works director Rodney Bollinger said via email.

“Due to a redesign to accommodate a shift in the walk alignment and value engineering from the contractor to provide a route that will decrease long-term operations and maintenance costs to the city, several quantities have decreased or have been otherwise modified by the change order,” Bollinger said. “I am very pleased to report this good news to the mayor and board.”
