Jackson to move fire administrators' offices

JACKSON, Mo. -- A city-owned building most recently leased to a carpet business will soon house Jackson Fire Department administrators.

The building at 503 S. Hope St. previously was leased to Phillips Carpet. It is located near the city's police and fire department building.

"This will free up additional space in the police and fire department headquarters," said assistant city administrator Larry Koenig.

Monday, the Jackson Board of Aldermen accepted the bid of BBL Buildings and Components, Ltd.., of Perryville, Mo., to repair the building's roof. The painted steel roof will cost the city $31,147.

Concrete bid

On Monday, the board also accepted the bid of Kluesner Concrete, Inc., of Scott City, Mo., to repair streets under the city's 2001 Concrete Street Repair Project. The city will spend $129,216.90 to make 40 patches on city streets. The repairs will include seven or eight patches on Shawnee Boulevard and a large patch on Hope Street, according to city engineer Dan Triller.

Triller said the project is expected to be complete by Dec. 1 with the concrete portion due to be substantially completed by Nov. 1.

In other business, Mayor Paul Sander said the city will begin negotiating a date to hold the next Cape Girardeau-Jackson joint council meeting. The next of the annual meetings started by Sander and Cape Girardeau Mayor Al Spradling III will be held in Jackson.

Sander predicted Spradling will be wearing Jackson Indian red at the next Cape Girardeau City Council meeting. The mayors have a standing bet on the outcome of the Jackson-Cape Central game, which will be played Friday. The loser must wear the winner's colors at the next council meeting.

Spradling has had to wear Jackson red two years in a row.
