JACKSON - A Recycling Fair will be held in Jackson Saturday to help people become more aware of the recycling program.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, at the street department shed at the end of Florence Street, near the old power plant.

Jackson City Administrator Carl Talley said the city is sponsoring the event to develop an awareness of recycling and to distribute information on recycling to the public. "The fair is really a demonstration project and practical exercise for citizens who want to start recycling waste products," Talley said.

Items that can be recycled at no charge at the fair include plastic containers, aluminum cans, rag waste, cardboard, glass containers, metal scrap, yard waste and household items. "No large brush piles will be accepted," he emphasized.

Talley said the Recycling Fair will also accept items that are no longer permitted in the city landfill such as batteries, used motor oil, tires and appliances such as stoves, freezers and refrigerators.

He said there will be a disposal charge for these items: Old car tires, $2 each, or truck tires, $3; batteries, $1 each; used oil, $1 per gallon for one to five gallons and $2 per gallon for more than five gallons; and large appliances $5 each.

Talley said all proceeds will be donated to the Boy Scouts program in Jackson.

Talley said other recycling programs will be held at the street department in the future. For more information contact City Hall at 243-3568.
