JACKSON -- The Jackson Board of Education approved a schedule for accepting applications for the April school board elections during a meeting Tuesday night.
Elections will be held April 7 to fill two three-year positions. The seats are held by board secretary Jeanette Bollinger and former board president Marvin Adams.
Candidates may submit applications at the Jackson Board of Education office, 221 S. Oklahoma, beginning Dec. 23. Applications will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each business day through Jan. 20. The office will be closed Dec. 24-25, 31 and Jan. 1.
Board members also approved a water line easement and change order amounting to $1,601 for the South Elementary School construction project.
School superintendent Dr. Howard Jones said administrators have been working with city officials to get water and sewer lines developed for the site for several months. The change order and easement approvals were necessary because work at the site is progressing rapidly and contractors could be ready to use water and electricity hookups at the site as early as next week, he said.
The city agreed to cover part of the costs associated with building the new line and installing a fire hydrant with the appropriate hookups at the site. Because of the future development potential for the area, the city probably would have had to cover those costs eventually, he said.
In other business, the board adopted resolutions honoring a number of students who have achieved state recognition during the semester. Two resolutions were approved honoring students selected to the Missouri All-State Band and Missouri All-State Choir.
Athletes from the Jackson High School softball and varsity football teams were honored with resolutions for their selection to all-state teams. The football team was also honored for completing its regular season undefeated with a 10-0 record.
"The board instructed me during our last meeting to develop resolutions honoring those students who had been selected to all-state positions," said Jones. "It is always a pleasure to see Jackson R-2 students recognized for their accomplishments, especially at the state level."
