JACKSON, Mo. -- As expected, the Jackson Board of Aldermen Tuesday night acted to kill a plan to rezone 181 properties in the city's central business district.
The board filed the recommendation of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission to reject the rezoning of the properties from C-3 (central business) to C-2 (general commercial). The rezoning would have decreased the size of the central business district and would have imposed new restrictions on the properties excluded from the district.
The city's planning and zoning commission had proposed the change and then changed its mind after 30 property owners who spoke at a public hearing unanimously opposed the rezoning.
The Board of Aldermen could have held its own public hearing on the issue but declined to.
"We are officially killing the proposal that was before the planning and zoning commission," Mayor Paul Sander said.
City Administrator Steve Wilson said a new repeater for the police department communications system is expected to be installed next week on the JCS/Tel-Link antenna in Cape Girardeau. The repeater strengthens the signal broadcast by dispatchers.
Wilson said police sometimes have been unable to receive messages on their portables, and communications have been plagued by bleed-through from other frequencies.
Wilson said similar repeaters for public works and the fire department have been working well.
