JACKSON -- Jackson residents now have a full service recycling center.

The city held a grand opening for the renovated at 508 Eastview Court Friday

Public Works Director Tom Morris said the center renovation was 70 percent funded by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through a grant awarded last year for waste reduction and recycling. Total cost of the project was $42,500.

Jack Floyd, sanitation and recycling supervisor for the center, said much of a family trash can be recycled and brought to the center. Just by following a few simple steps materials from daily use can be readied for recycling.

Those bringing materials to the center must sort and place their own recyclables. Center employees will assist anyone as needed.

The center takes glass, plastic, paper, metal, and aluminum materials. Floyd said clear, brown and green container glass such as wine bottles or pickle jars are recycled. The glass needs to be unbroken, lids off, and washed. Labels may be left on.

Plastic containers are accepted if they are marked with a recycling symbol and made of number 1 or number 2 plastic. Floyd said any kind of paper material is taken, including cardboard and junk mail.

All paper materials must be either in paper or plastic bags or bundled with string.

Floyd said the center takes any type of metal. Tin cans and their lids must be washed. Labels may be left on. Aluminum cans are also taken.

He said the center is fully manned and containers are available for each recycling material.

Center hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday's hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to noon.
