Jackson officials delay contribution toward fireworks

Before the Jackson Board of Aldermen decides how much money to supplement the Jaycees for its annual fireworks display, it wants to understand more about the club's Fourth of July expenses.

The board discussed the issue Monday night at its study session.

The city contributed $1,000 in 1997. In 1998 and 1999, the city kicked in $1,500. In 2000, the donation doubled to $3,000, went up to $4,000 in 2001 and $5,000 in 2002.

Alderman David Reiminger suggested giving $5,000 to the Jaycees again, but the board finally said it wanted to get more information before placing a certain amount on the agenda.

Mayor Paul Sander said he wasn't opposed to Reiminger's suggestion, but said he would like to see a progress report, much like the Jackson Chamber of Commerce gives when it asks for money.

"Maybe it could be leveled off and even be less in the future," Sander said.

Alderman Val Tuschhoff said she doesn't want the Jaycees to becoming dependent on more and more city money.

"That's taxpayer money," she said.
