JACKSON, Mo. -- A 26-year-old was charged with domestic assault of a woman and then kidnapping their 1-year-old child on Wednesday, the Cape Girardeau County prosecutor said.
James D. Proffer of Jackson was charged with second degree domestic assault and parental kidnapping, both felonies, prosecutor Morley Swingle said.
The victim told police that he had assaulted her on Wednesday by beating her head against a wall and hitting her repeatedly with his hand on her face, head and back.
After the assault, the suspect is said to have taken the child from the residence. Police said the child was later found with Proffer.
Associate Circuit Judge Gary Kamp ordered that Proffer have no contact with the victim or come within 500 feet of her residence.
Proffer is being held in the Cape Girardeau County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 bond.
