Jackson Police arrested a man Sunday in connection with two weekend burglaries, thanks to assistance from a police canine who was able to lead them to some of the stolen items and eventually the suspect.
Daniel R. Turner, 21, 253 S. Union St., was charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, felony stealing and misdemeanor stealing.
According to a probable-cause statement written and signed by Sgt. Scott Eakers of the Jackson Police Department, a woman notified police Sunday morning that she'd caught a man burglarizing her home and confronted him, causing him to run.
She told police he'd taken her new Dell laptop and a pack of Marlboro Lights cigarettes.
A police dog was used to begin tracking the area from around the victim's home, and while investigators were working on the burglary, another victim contacted them saying her house had also been burglarized. She reported being woken up by a man in her bedroom with a flashlight, who said he wanted money.
The intruder left, but took some pills and her piggy bank, she told police.
The dog found a trail that led to the stolen laptop and other items, found near a trash bin at an apartment complex at 724 W. Jackson Blvd.
A search of the apartments led to Turner, who matched the description the victims gave of the burglar, and police found cigarettes and lighters on his person that matched the description of what was stolen, the statement said.
He was placed in custody and is currently being held at the Cape Girardeau Jail on a $25,000 bond.
