Jackson officials discussed a revised building permit and inspection fees penalties policy during the board of aldermen's study session Monday night.

Janet Sanders, building and planning superintendent, said under the former policy, violators would be sent to court. The new policy was established as a "less embarrassing" process for violators.

The discussed new policy for contractors or residents without a permit would charge a fee on top of the permit fee, in most cases the additional fee resulting in $20.

She said many of the cases involve building or replacing fences, sheds, swimming pools and decks, most of which, result in the minimum permit fee of $20. If it involves electrical work along with building, it will result in two fines.

She said residents should remember that interior remodeling such as remodeling a basement or adding a bathroom also require a permit.

Sanders said the policy includes revisions for repeat offenders, as the city has faced these cases in the past. A $250 fee will be charged for offenders with a third violation within 24 months.

"If you've been through it once, you should know the second time," she said.

Sanders said she would like the new policy to be voted on at the next board meeting.
