Jackson brothers arrested after passing vehicle is hit by gunfire

Jackson's first shooting in several years broke a window of a moving vehicle, but no one was injured.

Cody A. Reid, 17, and his brother, Lonnie D. Reid, 18, both of 4847 Old Cape Road in Jackson, were arrested in connection to the early Tuesday morning shooting.

Following an altercation around 1 a.m. in the 4800 block of Old Cape Road, Cody Reid went into his home for a .22-caliber rifle, according to a probable-cause statement filed in the case.

Reid fired the gun into a crowd, striking a window of a passing vehicle, the statement read. The bullet pierced the rear, driver's side window and struck the seat. No one but the driver was in the vehicle at the time, according to Jackson Sgt. Scott Eakers

Had someone been sitting in that seat at the time, they would have been shot, Eakers said.

"We got real lucky on this one," he said.

The two brothers fled the scene and hid the rifle under a relative's nearby mobile home, Eakers said. The pair then switched vehicles and were arrested a short time later, the probable-cause statement read.

Officers spoke with witnesses who identified Cody Reid as the shooter, Eakers said. The weapon, which was recovered, belonged to a family member.

Both brothers were charged with misdemeanor tampering with evidence. Cody Reid was charged with misdemeanor discharging a firearm across a public highway, and Lonnie Reid was charged with misdemeanor minor in possession of alcohol.

When arrested, Lonnie Reid smelled of alcohol and a submitted breath sample showed a 0.031 blood-alcohol content level, the probable-cause statement read.

Bond was set at $2,500 for Cody Reid and $3,500 for Lonnie Reid.

Eakers did not know what the altercation that prompted the shooting was about. This was the first shooting in Jackson in about five or six years, according to Eakers.
