JACKSON -- Whether 1.6 acres at the intersection of Highway 72 and Old Toll Road should be rezoned from residential to commercial so the owner can sell ornamental plants will be taken up at the May 18 meeting of the Board of Aldermen.
David Miller, who owns the property at 1517 W. Jackson Blvd., requested the change at a public hearing Monday. He brought the board a petition with the names of eight nearby property owners who favor the change.
Miller told the board he thinks the area is headed toward commercial development and the eventual best use of the property years in the future will be as a strip mall.
Jack Weith, who lives at 1518 W. Jackson Blvd., spoke against rezoning the property commercial, though he said he doesn't oppose Miller selling ornamental plants.
Weith favors granting a special-use permit and submitted a petition with two signatures.
In other business, the four members of the board re-elected in the April 7 election took their oaths of office. They are Aldermen David Ludwig, Larry Cunningham, Fred Leimer and Dave Reiminger. The board also approved Mayor Paul Sander's appointments to the city's boards and committees.
Bob Adams, Bernard Proffer and W.M. "Wilburn" Proffer were reappointed to the Planning and Zoning Board. Don Starzinger and Grace Wille were reappointed to the Park Board, and Kirk Williams joined the board as a new member.
Bill Poe was reappointed to the Board of Adjustments, and Dr. T. Wayne Lewis and Dr. Ramiro Icaza were reappointed to the Health Board. Dr. Dwight Johnson became a new member of the board.
New members of the Library Board are Holly Statler and Betty Butler, with Alan Gregory reappointed.
