Jackson board OKs new subdivision, 13th since 2002

Construction is expected to begin next March on another subdivision in Jackson.

During its meeting Monday night the Jackson Board of Aldermen approved preliminary plans for the Meadows at Oak Creek.

Located near Jackson Middle School off Route D, the subdivision will have six lots. Developer Brandon O. Williams said each home will have three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The subdivision will be Williams' second to construct; he began developing homes in Jackson Ridge off Route PP in 2007.

The action marks the 13th new subdivision consisting of at least three lots in Jackson since 2002.

Seven new single lots and 25 additional phases to established developments -- both which are considered subdivisions by the city -- also have been added in the last seven years.

"Our board of aldermen and our staff are pleased that we have continued to have new housing development in our city in spite of a downturn in the economy," Mayor Barbara Lohr said. "The fact that many developers are continuing to invest in installing infrastructure and preparing lots for sale indicates that they have confidence that people will continue to move to Jackson."

Earlier in the meeting the aldermen approved:

* Rescheduling the Annual Recycling Center Customer Appreciation Day to Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* An ordinance accepting the dedication of a Sanitary Sewer Easement Deed from Bruce and Cheryl Thomas, regarding the Elwanda Drive Relief Sewer Project.

* An ordinance accepting the dedication of a Sanitary Sewer Easement Deed from Benny and Brenda Myers, regarding the McKendree Hills Subdivision Sanitary Sewer District Project.

* Mayor Barbara Lohr's appointment of Martha Minton to fill an unexpired term on the Planning and Zoning Commission, ending May 2010.

* Authorizing the closure of certain streets in the Central Business District at 4 p.m. today for the Jackson Band Festival parade.

* An ordinance abandoning a portion of the Maple Street public right of way.

* An ordinance amending the Stop Street Schedule Schedule VI, by adding a designation on the off-ramp at the Interstate 55/East Main Street Interchange, and repealing a designation on South High Street.

* An ordinance accepting the dedication of right of way, permanent access and utility easements and temporary construction easement deeds from the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation.
