JACKSON - The Jackson Board of Aldermen voted Monday night to authorize a street improvement project which will re-pave five blocks of West Adams from Oklahoma eastward to High Street.
The project, scheduled to begin later this year, is similar to the West Main Street improvement in which the old pavement was removed and replaced with new concrete.
The board also approved the purchase of several items of new equipment, including a tractor from Bangert Ford of Jackson for $22,585, and an accessory brush hog mower for the tractor, bought from Erb Industrial Equipment of Cape Girardeau at a cost of $17,990.
Also approved was the purchase of an 84-inch rotary cutter from Bangert Ford for $2,980. It will be used on another tractor.
The board also approved the purchase of a compact tractor and 60-inch mower from Strack Equipment of Jackson for $8,600, and a Cub Cadet Model 1440 tractor with 42-inch mower from H & S Equipment of Jackson for $2,994.
Also approved was the purchase of a used, six-ton, carbon dioxide storage vessel and vaporizer that will be used at the city water plant for new-process re-carbonation, at a cost of $9,800. The vessel has been in use at the American Car Foundry plant in Jackson, which was leasing it from the manufacturer.
In other business, the board gave permission to Sandy Miller to treat about 150 feet of gravel road with oil to control dust. The road is on the Old Toll Road near the intersection with Highway 72. The treatment is similar to that done at the other end of the gravel road. The cost of the oil will be borne by the property owner.
The board approved a request by Miller to install 30 mph speed limit signs along the Old Toll Road, near the intersection with Highway 72.
Acting City Engineer Rich Bowen reported the contractor is preparing to start construction of the sanitary sewer system wet well along East Jackson Boulevard.
The board also approved requests from the Jackson Uptown Merchant's Association to block off portions of South High Street on the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in October for special sale promotions.
Also approved was a request by the Jackson American Legion to block off a part of the uptown area next month for a Veteran's Memorial Day program.
