The Jackson Board of Aldermen will vote on instituting a snow route ordinance at today's meeting. The ordinance would require residents to have vehicles, trailers, etc., off of the sides of major roads during a snow or ice storm.
Jackson Mayor Barbara Lohr said while the city does not typically have many major storms during a year, there is still a need for designated snow routes.
"People think because we only have one or so storms, it isn't a big deal," Lohr said. "It is a big deal. Our trucks have to go around cars to clear the roads and then the car owners get mad because they have snow on both sides of their car. We have to be able to do snow and ice removal efficiently."
She said the ordinance would pertain to several major roads in the city but would not affect the historic uptown district, which is cleared differently than other areas in the city.
The board is also expected to set a public hearing for Oct. 18 to discuss the findings of a recent electric cost of service study performed by Burns & McDonnell of St. Louis. The mayor said the firm has prepared previous studies for the city and the current one may suggest ways to lower electric rates.
