The Jackson Board of Aldermen approved a central business district street closure request from the American Legion for Homecomers 2011, establishing next year's festival in the uptown district from July 26 to July 30.
While temporary street closures are common approvals for the board, Mayor Barbara Lohr said that one is significant because it dispels rumors the event is being moved to the city park.
During the board's study session, aldermen tabulated bids for an electric transmission line. Lohr said the line is necessary because the city's current one is overburdened, especially during extreme temperatures.
The lowest bid was from Powerline Consultants LLC of Farmington, Mo., for $639,036.99. A decision regarding the contract will be made at a future meeting.
In other action, the board:
* Approved the appointment of Mayor Barbara Lohr to serve on the Enhanced Enterprise Advisory Board.
* Approved $400 to be spent on improvements to the veterans memorial in Brookside Park.
* Approved a contract with Cape Girardeau Area Magnet for one year until Dec. 31, 2011.
