The Islamic Center in Cape Girardeau raised $3,750 Saturday for Asia Relief's tsunami effort through dinner tickets, a garage sale and personal donations from the community.
The dinner of curry chicken, rice, hummus, chickpeas and masala could be smelled0 from a half mile away and was a hit even with those unfamiliar with the exotic foods. At the end of the night there were no leftovers to pack as every scrap of food had been eaten by the 300 in attendance.
Members of the Islamic Center credited the volunteers who gave their time and ingredients to make the dinner a success.
Midwest Meat Store contributed 50 pounds of chicken for the main course, while Schnucks provided the soda, and Shangrila helped prepare the meal. Toni's Flower House donated several plants to be sold at the event, and Sam's Club was one of the numerous money benefactors.
Those interested in contributing further donations can visit Asia Relief Web site (www.asiarelief.org) or mail checks to: Asia Relief, 19409 Olive Tree Way, Gaithersburg, Md. 20879.
