PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- Authorities are still investigating the details surrounding the death of two Portageville girls, the Daily Dunklin Democrat reported.

According to Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams, no charges have been filed in the case.

"As far as I know, we haven't got all of the paperwork back yet," Adams said, noting that he can't speak for all of the agencies involved in the investigation. "As of right now, we don't have anything."

Adams said ultimately, any charges in the case will be up to the prosecutor.

"I haven't seen any of the work [the other agencies] have done," Adams said. "We just have to wait and see what they come up with and what the prosecutor says."

Adams said that at this point, nothing has been turned in to the prosecutor, but he "should know more" by the end of the week.

The 2-year-old twin girls were found dead inside of their grandmother's hot car on Wednesday.

Adams said all the windows in the car were rolled up when someone discovered the dead toddlers late Wednesday afternoon. Police said the deaths appeared to be heat-related.

The car was parked at an apartment complex in Portageville.

Adams said it wasn't known how the little girls got inside the car. Their parents and grandparents were talking to investigators at the police station Wednesday evening.

Temperatures in the area were in the upper 80s to low 90s Wednesday afternoon.
