In federal court: Cape man sentenced for interstate possession of stolen goods

*** The U.S. attorney's office released the following information Monday for defendants who appeared before U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr.

SENTENCED

Name: Joel K. Day

Residence: Cape Girardeau

Charges: Interstate possession of stolen goods

Summary: Day was sentenced to 37 months on three felony counts of interstate possession of stolen goods. He admitted that on Dec. 4, 2010, he stole a 2011 Ritenouer brand, 53-foot aluminum trailer and its contents from Mount Vernon, Ill. The value of the stolen goods totaled in excess of $5,000. He later moved the trailer and contents to a storage building he had rented in Cape Girardeau County and had the trailer cut into pieces and sold as scrap metal.

On Feb. 13, 2011, Day stole a 2002 Trimcar Trailer from a lot in Anna, Ill. The value was in excess of $5,000. He also moved this trailer and contents to his storage building and had the trailer cut into pieces for resale as scrap metal. On Feb. 17, 2011, Day stole a 1998 Smith Cattle trailer, valued in excess of $5,000, from a lot in LaCenter, Ky. Once again, he moved the trailer and its contents to his storage building and had the trailer cut into pieces for resale as scrap metal.

Cape Girardeau County deputies executed a search warrant Feb. 23 following a fire at the storage building. The recovered various parts of the three stolen trailers.
