Twenty-four school board members will be elected in the Southern Illinois counties of Union, Pulaski and Alexander on Nov. 7, 21 for four-year terms and three to fill unexpired terms. Twenty-four school board members will be elected in the Southern Illinois counties of Union, Pulaski and Alexander on Nov. 7, 21 for four-year terms and three to fill unexpired terms.

The most candidates filed for office in the Dongola School District, where 10 people are running for three positions. Election officials said the field is the largest in the district in 20 years. Only incumbent Dare Aden has filed for re-election.

Three incumbents are among the six candidates in the Cairo Public School District. Incumbents D. Tyrone Coleman, Arnold Burris Sr. and Marlene Schultz will face challenges from Faye M. Howard, Robbie M. Koen and Daniel James Brown Sr.

Also on the ballot is a race to fill an unexpired two-year term. Tim J. Pierce is currently filling the vacancy. Opposing Pierce will be Carlandus Mallory.

The Cairo district was the scene of a 24-day teachers' strike last winter.

Six candidates have filed for three four-year terms at Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake, including incumbents Rodney Brown and Gerald L. Franklin.

Nine candidates have filed for four positions at Meridian High School at Mounds. Five of the candidates are in one township where only two will be elected. They are incumbent Lasverna Thomas and challengers David Hudson, Ruth Schoen Harris and Sam Johnson.

Other candidates for re-election include incumbents Paul Helman and Randy George, who live in other townships. Other challengers include Carolyn S. Dumas and Paul Dumas.

There are no candidates for an unexpired two-year term, but write-ins will be accepted.

Only two people will be elected from among five candidates in Township 153 at Tamms. Incumbents include Mike McCrite and Lowell Mendenhall. Challengers are JoAnn Turner, Dennis Abercrombie and Dwayne Buck Ross.

Two more Egyptian School District candidates from other townships have no opponents. They are incumbents John Sutton and Diane Blaney.

Five candidates have filed in the Century School District near Ullin, including incumbents Guy H. Inman and Mike Ulen.

Four candidates have filed in the Anna-Jonesboro High School District.
