SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- People who are fed up with getting sales calls at dinner time can get relief under a new state law -- although not enough relief, according to Gov. George Ryan.

With "some disappointment," Ryan signed legislation Friday that lets people sign up for a "no call" list if they don't want to be contacted by telemarketers.

People pay $5 to get on the list, which telemarketers are required to buy. Businesses that call people on the list could be fined $1,000.

But the bill contains many exceptions. Ryan said he nearly used his amendatory veto powers to remove all exceptions but decided that would be overstepping his authority.
