ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Humane Society is sending six more animal rescuers to the southeastern Texas coast following an urgent request from that state's emergency management officials.
On Thursday, six animal care and rescue staff from the Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Unit left for Galveston. They will join a 10-member team that arrived Saturday.

The Missouri group has been designated the lead animal rescue agency in the Galveston area. It is coordinating nine field teams that are searching homes, yards and through rubble for stranded animals.
On Wednesday, the field teams made more than 100 rescues involving dogs, cats, birds, a rabbit and cattle.
The Humane Society says the teams are finding many more animals left behind than they had anticipated.
