The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri asks that you remember the homeless animals in the Cape area at Christmas and donate cat food, dog food or kitty litter in the bins at area grocery stores.

"Food is really scarce here this year," said Nancy Richards, director of the Humane Society.

The Humane Society has placed galvanized trash cans that have been decorated at Schnucks, Food Giant, Shop N' Save and Del Farm for donations to be placed in.

"We hope that with the holidays that people will dig a little deeper into their pockets to help out the homeless animals in the area," Richards said.

The shelter does not allow any animals to be adopted Dec. 16-26, "because we don't want them given as unwanted Christmas presents," Richards said.

People who want to give a pet as a gift can purchase a certificate at the shelter which can be redeemed by the recipient after Christmas.

"We want to make sure that the person wants the pet, likes the pet and can care for it," Richards said. "We still get a lot of animals after Christmas from people who don't want them or can't care for them."

Donations to the Humane Society can be made in the cans at the grocery stores, or gifts of money can be sent to the shelter at P.O. Box 1034, Cape Girardeau.
