JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The House approves a measure allowing some transfer students to skip government class.
School districts would be allowed to waive mandatory high school government classes for those who have already taken similar classes in another state.
Students would need to prove that they qualify for the exemption, but it would be up to schools to decide if the proof is sufficient.
The bill is mainly geared toward schools that have students from military families.
Almost two years ago, the state Military Preparedness and Enhancement Commission called for the change to help the state earn designation from the Pentagon as a "military friendly state." That's a factor in deciding what military bases are closed.
