House approves resolutions for projects at universities

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The House approved a resolution Wednesday that could commit the state to paying off bonds for improved agricultural facilities at Southwest Missouri State University.

Also clearing the chamber was a resolution that could lead to construction of a performing arts center at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Both measures now go to the Senate.

House Speaker Jim Kreider, D-Nixa, sponsored the resolution authorizing issuance of $2.6 million in bonds for Southwest Missouri State.

The money would allow work on a classroom building and two barns plus arena improvements at Darr Agricultural Center.

Under a separate resolution, the university could lease 24 acres in Columbia to a company for construction of a convention center.

Proceeds from the 50-year lease would go toward construction of a performance arts center on the campus.
