Homes in Jackson struck by lightning Wednesday night

The National Weather Service reported multiple homes in Jackson were struck by lightning when a severe thunderstorm moved through the area between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Lightning strikes from the storm, part of the remnants of Hurricane Dolly, took out power to about one-third of the city, the weather service reported on its Paducah, Ky., office Web site.

Other events associated with Wednesday's storms included:

Near Madisonville, KY...60 mph winds were measured on the south side of town about 2:50 p.m. Some damage was reported to a porch and a gazebo. Large limbs were down around the county. A few roads were blocked.Near Beech Creek in Muhlenberg County, Ky., lightning struck a house and set it on fire, destroying it.In Carbondale, Ill., trees and power lines were blown down at 7:20 p.m.

The ASOS (automated observing system) at the Carbondale airport measured 2.9 inches of rain in 45 minutes. Street flooding was reported.Around 4 inches of rain was measured in Marble Hill, Mo., by mid-evening. A wind gust to 47 mph was reported in Doniphan, Mo., around 10:30 p.m.
