MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- A fire destroyed a residence at Highway 51 and County Road 400 Sunday afternoon.

The Marble Hill Fire Department responded first, according to assistant chief Calvin Troxell, and eventually departments from Leopold, Zalma, Glenallen and North County arrived to help put out the fire that started in the carport area of the house and spread through four acres of grass.

"We had two separate fires," Troxell said. "We had the structure fire and a four-acre grass fire separate from the structure fire."

Fire did not damage an adjoining brick structure but did burn the area around it.

"The wind was definitely against us," Troxell said. "The other departments did an awesome job working with us."

The owners, Thor and Mary Hurst, were not home at the time, but a family dog was killed in the fire. Firefighters were able to salvage some personal items, but the majority of the house and its contents were destroyed.
