As the summer season is winding down, so is yard sale season. But bargain hunters can still look forward to two sales this Labor Day weekend: the sixth annual Highway 61 Yard Sale and the eighth annual Scott City Yard Sale.
The Highway 61 Yard Sale kicked off Thursday afternoon and will continue today and Saturday. Sale organizer Jonathan Khourie said more than 300 sales were set up along the highway last year and he is anticipating more this year. Sales are expected to begin between 6 and 8 a.m. today and Saturday.
The sale officially runs 61 miles from High Street in Jackson to Bloomsdale, Mo. However, Khourie said, the sale extended north past Bloomsdale last year.
The Missouri Department of Transportation anticipates more traffic and congestion along the highway than usual. According to MoDOT, message boards will be posted along the route to inform drivers of unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving.
"The sale usually brings a lot of extra traffic to Highway 61. It is estimated that the sale brings thousands of shoppers," Khourie said.
People can also attend the Scott City Yard Sale. The sale, which is organized by the Scott City Chamber of Commerce and Women's Club, begins today and will continue Saturday. Sales will begin around 7 a.m.
Sale organizer Chaundra Mason estimates about 40 vendors will take part in this year's sale. She is also expecting a good turnout from shoppers, "especially with the economy the way it is -- people are looking for a bargain."
Maps including the addresses of participating yard sales will be available at Paradise Florist at 614 Second St. in Scott City.
