Holiday lights will blaze throughout the city tonight, the first night of Cape Girardeau's first outdoor decoration tour and competition.

Laurel Adkisson, marketing coordinator for the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, said 20 judges from the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce were out Monday to view more than 200 decorated areas. Winners were selected from throughout the city.

Bus tours through part of the city are planned tonight, Friday and Saturday and again Dec. 19, 20 and 21.

Tickets, which cost $1, are available in advance at The Fantastics in the Plaza Galleria, and The Body Shoppe at West Park Mall.

Tickets may also be purchased at the bus, but Adkisson said some tours are close to being sold out.

Buses will leave from Plaza Galleria and West Park Mall at 7 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m.

Adkisson said that the bus tour is designed for viewers to see a concentration of lighting displays on a route suitable for a school bus to travel in an hour and a half.

But not all the winning decorations are on the route. Adkisson suggested people might want to include some of the winning decorations in other parts of the city on their routes when they take self-guided tours.

The chamber divided the city into seven sections for other beautification activities, and the Holiday of Lights winners were selected in each of the sections.

Judges selected two residential winners and one non-residential winner for each section.
