Like many older Americans, Mrs. D gets by on her Social Security.
Sometimes it means paying bills and foregoing groceries; sometimes vice versa. Mrs. D loves her church, and although she doesn't have much she gives to it what she can.
Church members make up Mrs. D's family since she doesn't have any children of her own.
Mrs. D visits her pharmacy regularly because she needs medication for her hypertension and arthritis. She often needs help paying the pharmacy bill.
Her needs are many; her wants few. She needs help with her utility bill, grocery gift certificates, toiletries, paper supplies and canned goods. She would like a green, lightweight dress-length raincoat in size 16 1/2.
Christmas for the Elderly provides people with special requests that many take for granted, including food, clothing and money for medications. The program, in its 12th year, is co-sponsored by Cape Girardeau County Health Services and the Southeast Missourian. Gifts may be delivered to the Southeast Missourian or area locations through Dec. 13. Drop off points are located at West Park Mall, Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, Boatmens Bank, Gullivers Travel Agency, Mercantile Bank, Union Planters Bank, The First National Bank, Commerce Bank, and Sanders True Value Hardware.
Cash contributions, cab coupons, paper products and grocery store gift certificates are always needed and may help elderly people all year long. Contributions may be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702-0699.
