Along the Whitewater River in Millersville lies the Miller farm which was originally settled by John Miller and his wife, Martha Clay Miller in 1803. The tract of 800 acres was a part of the upper Louisiana Territory under Spanish jurisdiction.

When the Millers arrived in the Cape Girardeau district, migrating from Lincoln County, N.C., they found the area a frontier wilderness. John and Martha Miller bore 12 children.
