Her academic standing at Egyptian Community Unit School in Tamms qualified her for the Indiana State University summer honors program. Geography and geology were the focus of the study during the June 18-27 session with the additional option of participating in the summer field trip to Russia. Earlier this summer, Shafer attended the Jackling Institute sponsored by the University of Missouri-Rolla to explore career opportunities in engineering.

She is a senior at Egyptian High School. Her parents are Ed and Sharon Shafer.
