The heat index reading at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport hit the century mark before noon Thursday.
The National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., reported an air temperature at the airport of 91 degrees with a heat index of 100 degrees just before noon. The forecast high was 94 degrees, with a slight chance of storms. The weather service expects temperatures in the lower to mid-90s and heat indexes between 100 and 105 degrees for the region through Sunday. The air should cool some Monday when a cold front comes through -- the high is forecast in the upper 80s on Labor Day.
