JACKSON -- Jackson Mayor Paul Sander announced at Monday night's Board of Aldermen meeting that public hearings on the City Comprehensive Plan update will be held.
The board approved a motion for payment of $453.22 to Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission for the update of the plan.
The plan, which is important to the orderly growth of the city, has not been updated since 1981.
Sander said the hearings will give the public an opportunity to express their views and ask questions.
The commission is in the process of collecting data and doing field work. Sander said the commission is in the sixth month of an update process that may take 15 months to complete. The hearings haven't been set.
The board also approved authorization of an agreement with BBL Building and Components LTD. for construction of a park maintenance and storage building. The board also accepted the company's bid of $42,311 for the building's construction cost.
The building will be constructed in Brookside Park north of Independence Street on property purchased by the city.
Sander said the old red barn on Route D, which is currently used as a storage facility, will be torn down.
"Many believe that it is an eyesore," Sander said.
In other business, Sander announced the approval of a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. A $5,000 waste tire playground and running track material demonstration grant will provide shredded tire material in Jackson City Park playground areas.
A letter to Sander from DNR said the solid-waste management program staff will begin preparation and processing of the award agreements within the next few weeks.
The next meeting of the board will be July 21.
