CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- The defendant charged in the death of Pemiscot County Officer Evan Burns appeared in court Thursday, with a hearing being rescheduled for early next month.
Deonta Williamson, 29, appeared in court before Judge Byron Luber with his case being rescheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 6. The reason for the reschedule was not provided.
In December, an order for a mental examination of the defendant was granted.
According to authorities, Williamson is facing six charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, first-degree assault, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest by fleeing, stemming from an incident in August, which resulted in the death of Burns, 28, and injury to officer Richard Altice.
According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, on Aug. 16, deputies spotted a 2002 Cadillac Escalade south bound on Interstate 55 North at Hayti, Mo. The Sheriff's Department had been notified by O'Fallon police that a vehicle matching this description was occupied by a suspect wanted by their department for assault in the first degree and auto theft.
The occupant was wanted for allegedly setting his step-father on fire and attempting to burn his home, and was considered armed and dangerous.
When deputies and Hayti police attempted to stop the vehicle, Williamson allegedly struck Altice's car, then headed towards Burns' car, striking it broadside in the driver's side. Burns was pronounced dead at the scene.
Williamson was charged and was provided no bond.
