JACKSON -- Bradley W. McIntyre, accused of stealing more than $500,000 from a Cape Girardeau philanthropist by deceit, made his first appearance in court on Wednesday.
For a year and a half, ending last November, McIntyre, 40, received money from B.W. Harrison, 89, most of which was supposed to have been for studying engineering at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, authorities said. McIntyre was never enrolled at the university, Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle's office said.
Cape Girardeau police said they are still trying to track down the money McIntyre was given. It's hard to say whether any of it will be recovered, police Lt. John Brown said.
McIntyre is currently out of jail on a bond of $125,000.
McIntyre didn't enter a plea Wednesday. Judge Michael Bullerdieck set a preliminary hearing for McIntyre on Feb. 16.
