Smokers throughout the country will try to kick their habit today, as the American Cancer Society sponsors its 24th Great American Smoke Out.

Numerous activities are planned for the area, including a program at Southeast Missouri State University where students can discuss their use of tobacco products and participate in a variety of games and activities.

A 1998 study by the Harvard School of Public Health said smoking among college students was up more than 27 percent since 1993.

Judy St. John, director of the Center for Health and Counseling at the University, said school officials think the Great American Smoke Out is a good opportunity to talk to students about the ill effects of smoking.

"The reason we're offering the program is because we care about students and their health, and we think this is a wonderful reminder to think about their use of all nicotine products," St. John said.

"We know that tobacco use is responsible for up to one-third of all cancer deaths, so I think taking a moment to think about the Smoke Out helps them to really kick the habit."

The American Cancer Society suggests the following tips for quitting smoking:

* Pick a stop-smoking date and mark it on a calendar.

* Tell friends and family about the quit day.

* Stock up on sugarless gum, cinnamon sticks, carrot sticks and hard candy.

* Decide on a plan. For example, decide if nicotine replacement therapy will be used, such as the patch or gum.

* Practice saying, "No thank you. I don't smoke."

* Set up a support system, such as a group class, Nicotine Anonymous or a friend who has successfully quit and is willing to help others do the same.
