Summer means construction and, with warm weather approaching, the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center wants to remind the public of the new Missouri laws governing on-site sewage systems.

People building a new system or changing an existing system should contact the Public Health Center. An on-site inspection by an environmental public health specialist could be required for any of the following reasons:

-- the land measures less than three acres

-- two or more residences are on one commonly owned piece of land

-- a new business is being built on any size lot

-- a financial institution requests an inspection

-- an "aggrieved" party files a septic complaint.

To assist the public with fees and regulations on septic systems, the health center has opened a branch office in the Jackson courthouse. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For information concerning new septic system regulations, call the Jackson branch at 243-5233 or the main center at 335-7846.
