ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- In response to a direct request from President George Bush, the American Red Cross will continue accepting blood donations from healthy people who wish to contribute.

American Red Cross president and chief executive officer Dr. Bernadine Healy also announced the launch of the National Strategic Blood Reserve.

The blood reserve will enable the Red Cross to freeze and store large amounts of blood to meet future uncertainties and avoid blood shortages.
