HAYTI, Mo. -- Police are investigating an early Sunday morning hit-and-run accident that killed a Hayti woman.

Martha Jean Davis Spain, 51, was found lying in the roadway of Cleveland Street by three occupants of a passing vehicle at about 12:30 on Sunday morning.

After calling authorities, the three people stayed with Spain until officers and an ambulance arrived. Spain was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.

Witness Sam Armstrong said the victim's possessions were scattered for several dozen feet at the scene.
