L. Cpl. Kelly is the son of Tom and Pat Kelly of Cape Girardeau. He is a 1988 graduate of Notre Dame High School and is attending Southeast Missouri State University.
He is a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, and was called up for duty in November. He was trained at Cape Le Juene, N.C. and arrived in Saudi Arabia in late December.
In a phone conservation with his mother, he said he is doing guard duty "way back" from the front line. He said he is getting hot food and has a roof over his head.
Pat Kelly said her son likes to play the guitar, listen to rock music, read science-fiction and war novels and work with computers.
