JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Republican officials kept their promise to help Farmington Mayor Kevin Engler raise money after he launched an 11th-hour campaign for state representative.
Engler was picked as the replacement Republican nominee in the 106th District on Sept. 19. In just eight days, from Sept. 23 through Sept. 30, Engler had raised an impressive $11,325. That amount is nearly triple the $3,845 that Farmington City Councilman Dennis W. Smith, the Democratic nominee, raised during the entire month of September, the period covered by the latest campaign finance disclosure reports.
Independent Elbert Bohnert of Perryville collected $1,340 last month.
Engler's candidacy began after the original Republican nominee, incumbent state Rep. Tom Burcham of Farmington, sought a court order removing his name from the Nov. 5 ballot following his second drunken driving arrest in five months.
After spending $4,469.52, Engler had $6,855.48 on hand as of Sept. 30. Smith spent $838.52 and reported $4,400.52 on hand. Bohnert spent $988.07 and reported $351.93 in the bank.
Almost 26 percent of the money Engler raised came from a single $2,925 donation from the 8th Congressional District Committee.
Interest groups, primarily labor unions, accounted for almost 56 percent of Smith's contributions, or $2,150. Democratic officeholders or committees provided an additional $1,025, or 27 percent of the total.
Bohnert provided $800 to his own campaign that accounted for most of the money he received. He had one $200 donation and a number of small contributions.
The 106th District represents parts of Perry, Ste. Genevieve and St. Francois counties.
