MOUND CITY, Ill. -- Republicans were winners in two local races in Pulaski County Tuesday.

Republican Harold D. Hargan received 1,439 votes to defeat his Democratic opponent, Gene Koen, by 257 ballots in unofficial returns in the race for Pulaski County commissioner. Koen received 1,182 votes.

In the only other contested race in the county, incumbent Republican Randy George received 1,649 votes to return to his circuit clerk's position, defeating Joe Kerr, who received 1,064 votes.

Democrat Patrick Duffy was unopposed in the state's attorney's race in Pulaski County. Duffy initially was appointed in April 1991, then was elected to a full term in 1992. He received 1,845 votes Tuesday.

Another unopposed candidate in Pulaski County was Republican Bill Atherton, who received 1,891 votes for coroner.

Pulaski County voters also cast ballots in the congressional race between incumbent Democrat Glenn Poshard and Republican Brent Winters. Poshard, who was declared the winner in the 19th District, received 1,986 votes in Pulaski County. Winters received 746 votes.

Republican Jack Hill received 1,282 votes in Pulaski County in the race for the U.S. House of Representatives' 118th District.
