Man robbed after offering to help supposed motorist
Cape Girardeau police are looking for a man they say robbed a resident at gunpoint after the victim first agreed to help him fix his car.
The suspect went door to door in the south part of town Wednesday telling residents he had car trouble, asking for money and to use a phone.
A resident at the 100 block of South Louisiana let the man use a cell phone rather than allow him into the house. But when that phone call supposedly wasn't answered, the resident offered to help the man take his car to a repair shop.
"He went back in his house to put on some other clothes and when he came back, the suspect was gone," said police spokesman Jason Selzer. "He spotted him a few yards away and called out to him."
The resident walked up to the man and continued to offer help, confused about why he walked away, Selzer said. Then the suspect pulled out a gun and demanded the victim's wallet and car keys.
The wallet was located a short distance away, along with the black Atlanta Falcons jacket the suspect had been wearing. Only cash was missing from the wallet, Selzer said.
