GOOD MONEY TO BE MADE AT SEMO

There's good money to be made at Southeast Missouri State University where nearly 22 percent of the employees receive salaries of over $50,000.Southeast has 983 full-time employees; 214 make over $50,000. Southeast has 42 more full-time employees this year than a year ago and 13 more employees making $50,000 or more, university salary records show.The overall average salary for all Southeast employees is $37,342, an increase of nearly $700 over last year's figure.But women still lag behind men in average salaries in many job classifications. Women hold nearly half the jobs at Southeast, but they make $11,372 less on average than their male co-workers.That's due in large measure to the fact that more than 37 percent of Southeast's 466 female employees work in clerical jobs, which pay less on average than other jobs at the school.Clerical workers make $19,120 on average. In contrast, full professors make $61,153 on average. Even instructors, the lowest faculty rank, make more than $34,000 on average.Southeast's top six executives include only one woman, Dr. Pauline Fox, who is vice president of administration and enrollment management. All are white.Southeast employs few blacks. Fifty-nine of the university's full-time positions are filled by blacks, six more than a year ago.Southeast has 372 faculty members; 11 are black. Only seven of Southeast's 59 administrative posts, which includes deans, are held by blacks.The salary records date from Sept. 20. They don't reflect the recent hiring of James La Cour as assistant to the president for equity issues. He will handle affirmative action and employment diversity issues in his $70,000-a-year job. La Cour, who is black, is scheduled to begin his new job on Nov. 8.Dr. Ken Dobbins, Southeast's president, said the university continues to make strides toward diversity."I think if you look at faculty as a whole or look at rank, the salaries are fairly equitable between men and women, and minorities and non-minorities," he said. The salary figures provided by the university are base salaries. Unlike staff, faculty salaries are for 10 months. Faculty who teach during the summer receive extra pay.The university in recent years has raised faculty pay to make it competitive with salaries paid at similar institutions nationwide."We are constantly trying to improve salaries so we can be competitive in the marketplace." That's important both in recruiting and retaining employees, the university president said.Dobbins said the university has to compete nationally for faculty and top executives and administrators.Most of the lower level administrative and staff positions are filled from a regional pool. Clerical and technical staff typically come from the area, Dobbins said."Generally speaking, we don't have discrepancies based on race or gender," he said.Dobbins said it isn't easy to boost the number of minority employees at the largely white school.There are relatively few black applicants in higher education, he said.When it comes to salary averages, many of the differences relate to years of service.For example, the average salary for male, full professors is $61,478. Women professors are paid $59,824 on average. But the average years of service is nearly 20 for men and nearly 16 years for women.Mike Dougherty, the school's personnel services director, said recent studies of faculty and staff salaries at Southeast have found that race and gender weren't factors in terms of pay.Both Dobbins and Dougherty put little stock in the salary averages for university employees as a whole. They said the important averages are those within individual employee categories.Dobbins said the bottom line is that the university remains a good-paying employer, which helps boost the local economy.
