SCOTT CITY -- Citizens have donated $4,000 toward the purchase of new lights at the Scott City ball park, but more money is needed, said Phyllis Spinks, city park director.

"This is going to have to come out of the goodness of people's hearts," Spinks said. "It's something the city just couldn't pay for."

Lights on field one in the city park need improvement to remedy dark spots, she said, and field three never had lights but needs them.

"On field three there are no lights at all, so we can only play 6 p.m. games," she said. "It would really speed up our summer schedule if we could play games after 8 p.m."

Contributions have been from individuals so far. The city hasn't yet

solicited civic groups to donate to the cause. But because about $6,000 more is needed to pay for the lights, Spinks said she may ask civic groups to hold fund raisers.

Proceeds from a girl's fast pitch tournament July 17-19 will be deposited in the light fund.

"Everybody uses the ball field, but it really does benefit the kids," Spinks said.

Individuals or groups wishing to contribute to the light fund should contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 264-3411 or Mike Miller at Miller Drywall, Inc., 264-4512.
