Most parents may not realize it, but safety seat checks show that four out of every five car seats are used incorrectly.
In an effort to reduce motor vehicle-related injury, the leading injury-related killer of children age 14 and under, the Cape Girardeau Area SAFE KIDS Coalition and Cape Girardeau Safe Communities organization are together offering a free car seat check up on Friday.
Parents may bring their vehicles to Fire Station No. 1 at 1 S. Sprigg in Cape Girardeau between 3 and 6 p.m. where safety seats will be inspected by trained technicians who can teach parents the correct way to install a child safety seat.
"Most parents believe they are taking all the right steps to protect their children in the car. They are shocked to learn how complex the process really is," said Heidi Crowden, area SAFE KIDS coordinator.
"This program is unique because parents can drive in and have their safety seats checked on the spot at no charge."
In addition to offering the car seat inspection, SAFE KIDS Coalition and Safe Communities will offer child passenger safety information. Parents will also receive hands-on instruction about the proper use of car seats and safety belts.
